These sculptures are from Geof Oppenheimer’s series Modern Assemblages, which appeared in the solo gallery show, “Inside us all there is a part that would like to burn down our own house.”

He detonates an explosive inside a cube made of ballistics plastic. This is what’s left behind.

It reminds me of the weird relationship between actual violence and depicted violence.

Like, we see more images of human-against-human violence—in video games, movies, TV, etc.—than anyone ever in the history of this species. (Already today, I’ve seen depictions of several hundred violent human deaths, because I watched a movie called The Expendables.)

But actual violence is increasingly abstract and distant from even those who perpetrate it: Most war-related deaths these days involve explosives, often detonated by people far away from the detonations themselves. Abstraction has kind of become the only way we can really think about this kind of violence, because we experience it abstractly unless and until the bombs land on us.

Also, I just think these sculptures are very beautiful*, and I like that they were created partly by chance and partly by careful design.

All in all, this is the best use of ballistics plastic I’ve seen since Mythbusters.

*Edit: I don’t mean “just” in the sense that the beauty of these sculptures is incidental. That the beauty results from (and relies upon) violence is of course central to the whole enterprise.

Let me get this straight. I show this art to you, I say to you basically what you repeated above, and I get no credit for this? It’s rough out there for a Sarah Green.

Everyone has been asking about MY Harry Potter tattoo and here it is! I got it this past October while in Orlando. I actually went to the Wizarding World that day so it’s extra neat. It’s the Career Advice chapter art from Order of the Phoenix with Fred and George flying away from Hogwarts. Fred and George have always been my favorite characters because they make me want to believe that I can do anything if I set my mind to it. There is actually this line that Ginny has where she says, “The thing about growing up with Fred and George is that you sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” For me, that meant a lot, and I love them for it

And the journey home begins, been a short visit and it was bizarre going alone since I’d never done it before, but it was worth it. Looking forward to Galway now at the end of the month for the DruidMurphy cycle of plays and Murphy’s interview with Fintan O’Toole.

‘The House’ Review Tuesday July 10th

When I think of plays, due to how we learn them in secondary school, I immediately think of READING a play. The difference between reading and seeing a performance is so dramatically different however, that I had preconceived notions of the text when I went to see The House earlier on this evening. So many elements of a text can fly by you without properly registering them until you see the performance. This is exactly the case when I saw this production. The writing transgresses my original idea of the text and I could fully appreciate the richness of the language, the comedic elements that can escape you in reading, and the experience of being in a room full of people who appreciate the art of dramatic performance for what it is.

The programe highlights the plays relevance to today’s world and I am going to emphasize it’s point here - emigration is the essential theme of the play, as well as a diaspora of people who are not at home because they have left their country, and people who have come ‘home’ to somewhere that they can no longer relate too; the idea of not belonging to anywhere. The house represents a home that is a home no longer. It shows how their is a lack of solace in emigration. The audience around me proves the relevance, an elderly woman talks to her neighbour of her daughter who is home from Australia for holidays - proving Murphy’s ability to deal with topics that are not fixed to one particular point in time.

The production values are of a high standard which one would expect from the Abbey, scene transitions are smooth considering the constant location changes and the performance by all parties is convincing. Declan Colman as Christy in particular has a strong on stage presence, and Peter, played by Frank Laverty, provides a highly funny and memorable character. As well as these, Cathy Belton and Eleanor Methven, Marie and Mother respectively, deliver noteworthy and moving performances.

Overall the evening was entertaining and thought provoking, and as Peter put it, “I’d a smashin’ fuckin’ time”.

Sitting on my first solo mission to Dublin, en route to see a hastily booked performance of Tom Murphy’s play, The House. I’m not even focusing on this play for my MA thesis but I don’t think I can pass up the opportunity to see it considering how lucky it is that so much of his work is being performed in Ireland this summer. I’m going to do a mini review after I see the play tonight, largely to do with the fact I’ve got nothing better to do when I’m on my own.

On a side note, the girl to my left is underlining parts of her copy of 50 Shades of Grey with pencil, I wonder why?
